MPS conferences and at every one there
have been questions from the floor about
the effect thatMPS could have on product
design, in particular the possibility of
developing printerswith significantly
longer-lasting consumables. Earlier this
month, Epson provided its own answer to
the question by unveiling the revolutionary
Replaceable Ink Pack System (RIPS), covered
on pages 25 and 26.Offered exclusively as
part of anMPS, RIPS has ink capacities of
75,000 pages per colour, enough for several
years of uninterrupted printing.
RIPS has enormous possibilities forMPS
providers, as long as they can convince
customers that inkjet is a viable technology
for businessworkgroups – now and for
years to come.Their taskwill bemade
somewhat easier by the fact that HP, too,
has just launched its first enterprise inkjets
(see page 28).
As Everton threaten to takeArsenal’s
Champions League place and Liverpool
challenge for their first title in 24 years,
could the natural order in office printing
also be about to change,with inkjet at
last superseding laser as the dominant
technology?
