It’s taken time, but there ismounting
evidence of sustained recovery in the
UK economy,which, in turn, is having
a positive impact onprinter resellers.
The latestmarket research figures
from IDC show that in the first quarter of
2014, theWestern European printer and
MFPmarket enjoyed its fourth quarter of
consecutive growth,with a 7.1% year-on-
year increase in sales. In theUK, saleswere
up by amassive 22.4%, though, as IDC
says, this increase is also a reflection of a
very poor Q1 last year.
Statistics from research organisations
are supported by strong anecdotal
evidence, like our survey of UK resellers
on pages 24-28.Almost all of those
questioned are enjoying sales growth, as
improved business confidence encourages
customers tomake up for years of under-
investment and refresh their printer fleets.
Resellers that have developed a
managed print services (MPS) capability
appear to be in a particularly strong
position, as this allows them tomeet
customer demand for higher service levels,
reduced print costs and, increasingly,
improved document processes.
No doubt,GuyGecht, CEO of EFI,
who

met upwith at IPEX
(see page 20),would congratulateMPS
providers on having the foresight to exploit
this ‘window of opportunity’.Another area
of the print industry that he says has strong
growth potential is digital production print.
Formany resellers, serving thismarket
presents an even greater challenge than
MPS. In the next issue,wewill look inmore
detail at what this involves.
