the Toshiba TEC Object Recognition
Scanner: Another solution with applications
in retail, this scanner automatically
recognises the shape and colour of objects
held up to it, e.g. a red apple, and presents
check-out staff with a shortlist of choices to
pick from;
n
the Toshiba TEC Contents Station: This
collaboration with Sony provides a quick
and easy way to buy and download movies
and books in airports and railway stations.
The self-service kiosk uses Toshiba Transfer
Jet technology to transfer data to a Transfer
Jet-enabled Android device placed in a
slot on the front of the kiosk. Files are
transferred at speeds of 100MB per second
making it ideal for last minute purchases
before take-off;

the Toshiba TEC Smarter Communication
Tabletop: Enabling more engaging
sales conversations with customers and
prospects, this tabletop display lets one
or more users interact with multimedia
content. Information can be moved around
the display surface or, with a quick swipe,
sent to a tablet or wall-mounted display or
even to a printer for printing. It is just as
easy to make notes on a tablet and send
them back to the surface screen for others
to see.
Vertical industries
Products in the Innovations showcase,
some of which are still in development,
gave visitors a glimpse of the (near) future.
Yet, their capabilities are not far removed
from solutions that Toshiba already
offers customers in key vertical industries
highlighted in a separate part of the
exhibition.
Using a variety of real-life scenarios,
Toshiba demonstrated how a combination
of hardware and software enables resellers
to tackle key print-related challenges, from
cost accounting and mobile printing in the
education sector, to wristband printing in
hospitals and barcode printing in logistics.
It also underlined the potential that
exists for dealers to increase revenue by
selling non-print solutions to customers,
such as digital signage and way-finding
solutions in hospitals or touch-screen
room-booking terminals in hotels, offices
and gyms.
Self-service is a key benefit of touch-
screen devices and on the Healthcare stand
this was taken to its logical conclusion
with a Toshiba all-in-one PC running
Carers software that enables GP patients
to obtain a diagnosis and prescription by
answering a series of questions. The retail
stand featured a touchscreen terminal
running Touch to Cook software that
prints out recipes, cooking instructions and
ingredients lists for shoppers.
Not that many years ago, secure print
release and driverless, wireless printing
from mobile devices would have seemed
remote and exotic, not to mention the use
of fingerprint scanners for authentication.
Now they are commonplace and used
everywhere from the classroom to the
boardroom. How long before solutions
based on Toshiba displays achieve the
same degree of acceptance?
